What does a funeral mean to you?
I only realised just how sterile, impersonal and ritually insignificant some of the funerals that had featured in my life had been, when I began training as a funeral celebrant and exploring the rich possibilities for honouring and remembering the dead.
The deep work of grief begins with an authentic ceremony - the process of choosing music and poetry and writing a eulogy helps comprehend and articulate the loss that is being experienced. Celebrating the dead doesn't gloss over the imperfections of the individual or the relationships they had with those left behind, but gently honours them for who they were in all their complexity.
